Lady Pank - “Minus Zero”

I first saw this video by the Polish band Lady Pank in the 80s, having stayed up late to watch the weird and wonderful show “Night Flight” on the USA Network. Part of this episode was a retrospective of the experimental filmmaker and music video director Zbigniew Rybczyński. His most famous and distinctive work in the States was probably the insane video for Art of Noise’s “Close (to the Edit),” which damn near broke my brain the first time I saw it, and made me think Art of Noise was cooler than they actually were. (Seriously, watch it.)

He also did a great video for “Sign of the Times” by Grandmaster Flash, which involved a spring-loaded stage that would launch the band and all their equipment into the air. You never see them come down… only up on every beat.

Then there’s Tango, which is just insane. I wish Palm Pictures Directors Label Series would release a DVD of his work.
